Nokia X3 review: Music X-three-M (Symbian, ASPA Mobile Phone Repair, Auckland)

The Nokia X3 is our first glimpse into the new Xseries and we’re excited to see how things have changed since XpressMusic ran the show. And they have changed, the new angular look is a testament to that. The S40 on the inside has changed as well, throwing Ovi Store and basic multi-tasking into the mix.

Currently the Xseries is composed of two completely different phones. The
Nokia X6 is a touch phone running Symbian, and the X3 is an affordable Series 40 slider. It packs stereo speakers, excellent audio quality and a built-in FM radio antenna for a complete sonic experience. All right, we said affordable, so don’t go looking for top-notch gear beside the obvious full music package.

The Nokia X3 runs the Series 40 6th edition but it’s unlike any S40 handset we’ve seen before. For a brief, joyful moment, we thought Nokia have finally given in and added multitasking. The truth turned out to be different but still there were small steps taken in the right direction. And you should see what they’ve done with the Gallery – it’s only a notch bellow the S60 one.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves and let’s take a look at the Nokia X3 pros and cons.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support
  • 2.2" 262K color QVGA display
  • 3.2 megapixel fixed focus camera
  • S40 user interface, 6th edition; rudimentary multitasking
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS; Built-in antena (so it plays on the loudspeakers even if you don’t plug the headset)
  • Stereo speakers
  • Standard 3.5mm audio jack
  • Up to 26 hours of music playback
  • Bluetooth (with A2DP) and microUSB port
  • microSD card slot (16 GB supported, 2GB included)
  • Rich preinstalled application package
  • Ovi Store, Ovi Maps and Ovi Share

Main disadvantages:

  • No 3G connectivity
  • Smallish display with poor viewing angles and sunlight legibility
  • Slider action has an unpleasant plastic-on-plastic friction
  • S40 interface feels clunky and out of date
  • No true multitasking
  • No smart dialing or an office document viewer
  • A bunch of software bugs
  • Video recording maxes out at QCIF@15fps

The specs look like nothing to be excited about but a shortish feature list never tells the whole story. So, think before you go “Nah, it sounds lame”, because you’ll be wrong about sound. We spent several days with it and now we’re ready to tell you the story behind those specs, the good, the bad and the ugly, the whole thing.

Do we have your interest? Good. Jump to the next page where we open the box and take a look at the Nokia X3. After the hardware inspection we’ll try to explain what the deal is with this multitasking-but-not-quite situation.

Worm attack bites at Apple iPhone (By: ASPA Mobile Phone Repair & Unlock, Auckland)

The first worm to infect the Apple iPhone has been discovered spreading "in the wild" in Australia.

The self-propagating program changes the phone's wallpaper to a picture of 80s singer Rick Astley with the message "ikee is never going to give you up".

The worm, known as ikee, only affects "jail-broken" phones, where a user has removed Apple's protection mechanisms to allow the phone to run any software.

Experts say the worm is not harmful but more malicious variants could follow.

The creator of the worm has released full source code of the four existing variants of this worm," wrote Mikko Hypponen of security firm F-secure.

"This means that there will quickly be more variants, and they might have nastier payload than just changing your wallpaper."
The picture of Rick Astley is believed to be a nod to the internet phenomenon known as Rickrolling, where web users are tricked into clicking on what they believe is a relevant link, only to find that it actually takes the user to a video of the pop star's song "Never gonna give you up".

'Stupid people'

The worm has so far only been found circulating in Australia, where the hacker - Ashley Towns - who wrote the program lives.

The 21-year-old told Australia's ABC News Online that he created the virus to raise the issue of security.

It only exploits jail-broken phones that have SSH installed, a program that enables other devices to connect to the phone and modify the system and files.

The worm is able to infect phones if their owners have not changed the default password after installing SSH.

"What's clear is that if you have jail-broken your iPhone or iPod Touch, and installed SSH, then you must always change your root user password to something different than the default, 'alpine'," wrote Graham Cluley of security firm Sophos.

"In fact, it would be a good idea if you didn't use a dictionary word at all."

After a phone becomes infected it disables the SSH service, preventing reinfection. The code contains numerous comments from Mr Towns about his motivation.

One comment reads: "People are stupid and this is to prove it."
"It's not that hard guys. But hey who cares its only your bank details at stake." The worm can be removed by changing the phone's password and deleting some files.

A spokesperson for Apple warned against jail-breaking handsets.

"These hacks not only violate the warranty, they will also cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably," the spokesperson said.

Some estimates suggest that up to 10% of all iPhones and iPod Touches are jail-broken.

The practice allows a phone user to install software and applications that have not been approved by Apple.

"Phone users may rush into jail-breaking their iPhones in order to add functionality that Apple may have denied to them, but if they do so carelessly they may also risk their iPhone becoming the target of a hacker," said Mr Cluley.

"My prediction is that we may see more attacks like this in the future."

The GSM encryption algorithm was broken (Mobile Phone Repair, ASPA, Auckland)

Put your tinfoil hats on - GSM encryption has been broken. This means that Evil Doers can listen in on your calls and read your SMS messages. Law enforcement agencies already have that capability, so this doesn't change things if Big Brother eavesdropping is what worries you.

The encryption algorithm used in the GSM network is called A5/1 and was developed in the distant year of 1987. There is a new standard called A5/3, which is much more secure, though not used by most carriers yet.

The published materials are not actually a complete wire-tapping tool - releasing that would be illegal. But it's a step away from becoming one. For about $30,000 you can buy hardware that would allow you to listen in on a call in real time. If real-time eavesdropping is not required, the price falls down to a few thousand dollars.

Of course, any sort of wire-tapping is illegal in most countries, as the GSMA was quick to point out, but that's like saying you can't buy a car that can go over 50 kilometers per hour because that would break the speed limit.

Still, wire-tapping hasn't been demonstrated (the researches don't want to go to jail and what not), so it's not clear how easy it would be to actually pull off in practice. The researchers claim that their main motivation is to push carriers to update to the new encryption algorithm and they just might - if they get enough bad publicity.

And before you actually put on a tinfoil hat and stop using your mobile phones keep two things in mind: 1) no one will pay 30 grand to listen to you talk to your mom and 2) phone scams are a much bigger security threat than breaking the GSM encryption.

Transformers theme has become quite popular today and there are many projects working on that. However, folks at Parkoz Hardware have come up with a very unique idea. Transforming cell phones, are they gadgets of the future?

Remember that cell phone in the Transformers movie that they put in the chamber and how it started transforming? Our cell phone could do that too consider Parkoz Hardware guys. Transforming from a usual cell phone to a destruction machine these gadgets would be very cool.

A pair of guns, mechanical legs and an evil mind makes the cell phone perfect mini weapon of mass destruction with reduced power of course. Well this would be helpful when threatening your pets or when asking your boss for a pay raise.

The only problem left is battery life. The battery needs to be very powerful in order to support this monster's movements. Oh, and one little problem, it needs to have some artificial intelligence micro chip in order to work, but that̢۪s no problem for our noble minds.

One last issue: what would they use as bullets? Anybody? Anything?

Smallest Desktop Computer in the world? (Gadget News Report, ASPA Mobile Phone Repair)

CompuLab introduces fit-PC2 which is now the smallest personal computer in the world. Fit-PC2 appears to be different from other nettop PCs at least by its tiny size. The device measures 115x101x27 mm which is smaller than a Compact Disk. The case of f
it-PC2 consists of aluminum which disperses heat so no fan is used. Fanless operation makes it noiseless and totally silent if used with a solid state disk.

Fit-PC2 seems to be standard computer with specifications as follows:|
1.6GHz x86 CPU
1GB RAM
SATA hard disk
DVI with graphics acceleration
High definition audio
LAN and WLAN
6 USB ports

Users can appreciate various capabilities of fit-PC2. Low power consumption is another plus which makes it the most power-efficient Intel Atom PC until now. Power consumption is just 6W in normal operation in Windows XP or Linux. Taking into consideration its power consumption it may be well named a Green Computer. Its weight is just 370g including hard disk which is nothing compared to another
PCs. Fit-PC2 can be controlled via IR remote control. Fit-PC2 is able to withstand extreme temperatures, vibration or a high level of shock. Affordable price, good performance, low power consumption, tiny size makes fit-PC2 an ideal personal computer for end users.

iPhone worm creator lands software job (hacker, news, report, tech, cyber)

The 21-year-old hacker who wrote the first iPhone worm has landed a job develo

ping software for the phones.

Ashley Towns wrote Ikee, a self-propagating program that changed the phone's wallpaper to a picture of 80s pop singer Rick Astley.

Mr Towns has now been employed as a iPhone application developer for

Australian firm mogeneration.

Ikee was not malicious but paved the way for a more serious variant which targeted users of the online bank ING.

"It leaves a nasty taste that he has been rewarded like this, yet has not even expressed regret for his actions," Graham Cluley of Security firm Sophos told BBC News.

Mr Towns said that he had created the virus to raise the issue of security. He has not faced any criminal charges.

'Wild worm'

It was designed to exploit jail-broken phones, where a user has removed Apple's protection mechanisms to allow the phone to run any software.

Estimates suggest there could be up to 25,000 jailbroken phones in Australia, whilst up

to 10% of the more than 55m iPhones and iPod Touches devices sold worldwide are thought to be cracked.

It specifically targeted those handsets with SSH (secure shell) installed, a program that enables other devices to connect to the phone and modify the system and files.

The worm was able to infect those phones where the owners had not changed the default password after installing SSH.

It could be removed by changing the phone's password and deleting some files.

After it was found circulating "in the wild", a second worm was discovered. Mr Cluley said it was "based" on Mr Town's code and targeted people in the Netherlands who used their iPhones for internet banking with Dutch online bank ING.

The new worm redirects the bank's customers to a lookalike site with a log-in screen. It can also be used to remotely control the phone without the users permission.

Analysts said that it was designed with a "clear financial motive".

Mr Towns is the latest in a long line of programmers to find employment after a high-profile hack.

In 2008, New Zealand computer hacker Owen Thor Walker was hired by a telecommunications company as a security consultant.

He had previously pleaded guilty or being part of an organisation that was thought to have caused millions of dollars worth of damage.

"We interviewed Ashley, assessed him with our iPhone developer test -

which he passed with flying colours - and we employed him today," said a spokesperson for mogeneration.

India blocks millions of mobiles for security reasons (tech, news, phone)

Millions of Indian mobile phones with no valid unique identification code have been blocked for security reasons.

The International

Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number is a 15-digit code which appears on the operator's network whenever a call is made.

The absence of this number makes it impossible to trace either the caller or the phone or to access call details.

Indian intelligence agencies say phones without the code have been used in attacks by militant groups.

Mobile phones without the code were blocked at midnight - operators were asked to bar calls to them "in the wake of increased threat perception from militants".

Cheap

It is estimated that India has more than 25 million phones without codes.

Phones with no codes or invalid numbers are mostly cheap, unbranded phones.

Millions are manufactured in India or imported, mostly from China.

Correspondents say these phones are popular because they are usually much cheaper than the branded ones.

Many phone subscribers said they were being wrongly penalised because they were not aware that every handset had to have a code.

The Cellular Operators' Association of India has asked the government to extend the deadline for blocking the numbers so that it can install identity numbers on unbranded devices.

According to estimates by the Indian Cellular Association, unbranded phones account for nearly 30% of all sales in India.

India has the fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, with more than 488 million subscribers.

Every month millions of new subscribers are added to the list.

How to Save on your car's fuel money (road, car, money, income, economy, recession, savings)

Hi, here's some petrol saving tips.

Someone who has been in petroleum pipeline business for about 31 years and is currently working for the Kinder-Morgan Pipeline in San Jose, CA wrote the following information:
We deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period from the pipe line; one day it's diesel, the next day it's jet fuel and gasoline. We have 34 storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Here are some tricks to help you get your money's worth.

Fill up your car or truck in the morning when the temperature is still cool. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground; and the colder the ground, the denser the gasoline. When it gets warmer gasoline expands, so if you're filling up in the afternoon or in the evening, what should be a gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and temperature of the fuel (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products) are significant. Every truckload that we load is temperature-compensated so that the indicated gallonage is actually the amount pumped. A one-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for businesses, but service stations don't have temperature compensation at their pumps.

If a tanker truck is filling the station's tank at the time you want to buy gas, do not fill up; most likely dirt and sludge in the tank is being stirred up when gas is being.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness, 2009 (Mobile Phone Sneak Preview, ASPA Mobile Phone Repair, Auckland)

Today Sony Ericsson announced the full specifications of the XPERIA Pureness handset, their first go at the high-end all-about-design devices market. Coming with a simplistic design and the typical for the class beautiful craftsmanship, feature-wise the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness is mostly a one-trick pony. But, oh my, what a trick it is - the XPERIA Pureness is the first mobile phone with a see-through display.

Moving on to the newly announced features of the device - Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness will measure 102.0 x 43.0 x 13.0 mm and will weigh only 70 grams. It will pack 88MB of internal memory, Bluetooth A2DP and USB connectivity. The quad-band GSM radio will give it worldwide roaming capabilities, while the 3G with HSPA support will deliver the high-speeds needed for the NetFront web browser (yes, there is one, even though it's grayscale only).

There's also FM radio onboard the XPERIA Pureness and the company's proprietary FastPort. It's still beyond us how come Sony Ericsson can place a crater of this caliber on the side of the phone and still promote it as fashion-minded.

Another thing missing is certainly the option for memory expansion as 88MB don't sound merely enough for storing your music collection.

The official specifications of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness also contain some pretty amusing mistakes. For one the company states that the display is capable of showing up to 262K colors, when in fact it is grayscale. One would think they will double-check that spec after the whole debate over the misspelled specs on the XPERIA X10. We also cannot see any M2 slot on the device (mind you, the battery cover cannot be opened).

Anyway, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness should be available before the end of the month for about 600 euro in select boutiques (you won't be finding that one in your run-of-the-mill operator shop). We guess, them piggy banks should start trembling, or should they?

Nokia N97 mini joins the club in white, looks ice cool (Mobile Phone Review, tech, report, ASPA Mobile Phone Repair)

The Nokia N97 mini has been available for only a few days now that we are faced with a nice winter-themed surprise. No, we're not talking about the phone contents, but rather its color. It's white this time in tune with the upcoming holiday season and most of all in tune with the original look of its elder brother - Nokia N97.

Back in the day when Nokia introduced the Nokia N97 mini, the device was expected in two color versions - Cherry Black and Garnet. Now, a few days after its market launch, N97 mini is also available in a third, previously unannounced, color variant. Well, you can bet it's as white as it gets. Meet the N97 mini Snow White.

As far as the functionality is concerned, nothing has been changed. You get the same 3.2" resistive touchscreen, slide out full QWERTY keyboard and a 5 megapixel autofocus sharpshooter. Unlike its bigger bro, the N97, which comes with good 32GB aboard, Nokia N97 mini packs only 8GB of internal memory. The other differences are minor.

When closed the two smartphones look almost the same. The same goes for the QWERTY keyboard (the only major difference here is N97's D-pad). The only deal breaker when it comes to N97 mini is its price which is about the same (if not higher) as the one of its more capable brother.

Nokia N97 mini is already available in white in select stores where it is sold exclusively but we hope to see it offered by a wider range of merchants as soon as possible because the white version looks really hot, uhh... sorry, we meant cool.

Is your Apple iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS PAWNED? (Mobile Phone Repair Unlock Tips, ASPA Mobile Phone

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques (that complicate the 3GS upgrade process) this will be a multipart release. This release starts with PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X – this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G.

NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR 2G/3G IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it – we’ll release when we have something ready.

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with ultrasn0w and rely on ultrasn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should only upgrade to 3.1 with a PwnageTool created .ipsw. – Stay away from Apple’s direct updates as described here and here please get up to speed on the whole subject by reading the information contained in these posts.

If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.1 unlock works with this PwnageTool release. iPhone 3G users upgrading to 3.1 will need to continue using ultrasn0w with a PwnageTool created 3.1 .ipsw

Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

Read items 1, 2 and 3 again and again.

At the bottom of this post are the bittorrent files for the 3.1 capable version of PwnageTool.

This app is suitable for the recent 3.1 release.

This version of PwnageTool will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.

PwnageTool WILL work for Original iPhone (1st Generation), Original iPod touch (1st Generation) and the iPhone 3G.

Baseband 101

The ‘baseband’ is the generic nickname given to the internal components of the iPhone that handle the phone calls and Internet access. This ‘baseband’ is a tiny and unique independent computer system that runs inside your iPhone, it is separate to the main system that handles the applications (such as email and google maps) and it talks to the main part of the phone over an internal communications network. Think of it like a cable modem or other peripheral that is attached to your home PC that needs occasional updates. When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 3.1 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband.

SIM Free/SP Unlocked/Factory Unlocked iPhone 3G
This applies if you bought your iPhone 3G for $$$$$$$. This model of iPhone 3G doesn’t have an Service Provider lock (aka factory unlocked) and you are able to put any SIM card into the phone and get service. Your phone is already unlocked so you do not need to worry about baseband updates, simply upgrade to 3.1 using iTunes and then use PwnageTool to create an ipsw and then use this to jailbreak your phone.

iPhone 2G (1st Generation)
Use PwnageTool to do the magic and then restore with iTunes using your newly created .ipsw ‘nuff said, you don’t need to worry about anything, the baseband will be unlocked, the phone jailbroken.

iPod touch 1G (Original iPod Touch)
Use PwnageTool to create a firmware image and restore with that .ipsw using iTunes.

iPod touch 2G
Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool, use Redsn0w for an earlier (pre 3.1) firmware release instead.

iPod touch 3G (New iPod Touch)
Sorry, no support at this time within PwnageTool
